Seven Data collection methods

7.1 Introduction

In the previous chapter we discussed the essence of data in research and the various issues that are attached to data itself. While data is important, it is the outcome of the data collection process. This makes the data collection methods and process an integral part of research outcomes. Rigorous data collection methods and processes result in quality data. This chapter will look at the various methods that researchers use to collect data for their research. In particular, we will focus on five key types of data collection methods, namely interviews, focus groups, participant observations, case studies and surveys. The chapter also highlights the use of archival data and data that spans across industries and countries.
